SR&ED filing deadlines and timing
Why the SR&ED reporting deadline matters and how to avoid a rushed claim process.

The reporting deadline is firm
For most corporations, the SR&ED reporting deadline is 12 months after the corporation’s income-tax return filing due date for the year. The exact date depends on the claimant and tax year, so confirm it with your tax adviser and the current CRA guidance.
Missing the prescribed reporting deadline can prevent a claimant from receiving SR&ED tax incentives for that year. Do not treat the deadline as a target date for starting preparation.
Work backward from the corporate filing calendar
Allow time for project screening, technical interviews, evidence collection, financial reconciliation and internal review.
- Screen projects while the people and decisions are still fresh.
- Collect technical records before systems, repositories or teams change.
- Reconcile labour and other expenditures before the tax return is finalized.
- Leave time for technical and financial reviewers to resolve inconsistencies.
Build an annual operating rhythm
Quarterly project check-ins and lightweight documentation habits reduce year-end disruption. The goal is not to create paperwork for its own sake; it is to preserve the decisions and evidence the team already uses to manage technical work.
